It definitely is helpful but not too helpful. Hopefully, they'll come up with another polearm that's skill-based calamity damage. For now, what ya said is the best bet.

the calam spear is gr8 for su yi in Maze because the maze summons trigger the spear gimmicks

Additionally, equipping a Calamity Polearm that is undergoing or has completed Fusion will make you even stronger.
